SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH EMOTIONAL WELLNESS

Menstruation is a normal and healthy biological process for girls. Yet, it is a topic that people are embarrassed to talk about, and is treated as something shameful or dirty. Stigma, taboos and myths prevent adolescent girls from the opportunity to learn about menstruation and develop healthy habits.

WE BELIEVE that it is imperative to make girls aware of the science behind menstruation, which can help prevent any kind of pelvic inflammatory diseases and infections and to remove all the taboos and myths about periods.

HELPING GIRLS. PERIOD.

Sleepwell Foundation in association with Enactus - IIT Delhi, Project TITLI organized a Menstruation Health & Hygiene Workshop for students of 5th and 6th Grade of Atal Adarsh Bengali Balika Vidyalaya, New Delhi on 9th August 2023.

140 students attended this workshop.

The objective of this workshop was to raise awareness and educate the students with knowledge and understanding surrounding menstruation, while breaking myths, taboos, stigma and shame, and silence that stifle the subject.

Members of Project Titli, Enactus - IIT Delhi conducted the workshop in two sessions.

The sessions were very interactive as the trainers made every effort to explain Menstruation Health & Hygiene to the girls through games developed by them. They also busted the myths through a series of questionnaires and made the girls comfortable to open up and speak about the subject. Discussions of menstruation have continued to portray periods as something to be embarrassed about and to be kept hidden.

The girls were immensely benefited by this workshop as they got an early start, and with the information thus acquired, they will face menstruation with confidence and dignity.

At Sleepwell Foundation, we believe that we can end the pervasive culture of shame that has long surrounded menstruation, stifling open dialogue around the subject by starting to talk about it. And, we can begin to create a future that empowers all who menstruate, especially the girls at the onset of menarche.

A woman’s menstrual health is crucial to her well-being, and also to the well-being of her family and community. But too often mindsets, customs and institutional biases prevent women from getting the menstrual health care they need to thrive. Menstrual hygiene continues to be amongst the most challenging development issues today.

Building a positive attitude towards menstruation and menstrual practices by educating menstrual hygiene to the girl child at the onset of menarche is crucial for health, and dignity of girls and women.

As a sincere effort, Sleepwell Foundation is regularly conducting these workshops in schools for building greater awareness among adolescent school girls, and through them, teachers, parents and society.
